Multi-Day Tour

Just an hour north of Cape Town, the West Coast feels like a different world entirely. The pace slows, the landscape opens up, and the light takes on a luminous, golden quality that has drawn artists and photographers to this stretch of Atlantic coastline for generations. This tour takes you to the heart of the West Coast, from the turquoise waters of Langebaan Lagoon to the whitewashed fishing village of Paternoster and the rugged beauty of Cape Columbine.

The West Coast National Park is the highlight, a protected stretch of coastline encompassing the crystal-clear Langebaan Lagoon, pristine beaches accessible only on foot, and a remarkable diversity of birdlife including flamingos, curlew sandpipers, and African black oystercatchers. In spring, from mid-August to mid-September, the Postberg section of the park opens to reveal one of nature’s most extraordinary displays: millions of wildflowers carpeting the landscape in vivid shades of orange, yellow, purple, and white, as far as the eye can see.

Paternoster is one of the oldest fishing villages on the South African coast, and it remains wonderfully unspoilt. Whitewashed cottages with blue shutters line sandy streets, crayfish boats are pulled up on the beach, and the pace of life is refreshingly slow. This is the place for a long, leisurely lunch at one of the famous open-air seafood restaurants, where you can feast on West Coast mussels, snoek, and freshly caught linefish while looking out over the Atlantic.

A short drive from Paternoster brings you to the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve and its lighthouse, perched on a wild and rocky headland. The reserve is home to abundant coastal fynbos and is a superb spot for whale watching in season, with Southern Right Whales often visible from the shore. The rock pools here are fascinating to explore, teeming with starfish, anemones, and small fish.

Whether you visit for the wildflowers in spring or the seafood and tranquillity at any time of year, the West Coast offers a side of the Cape that most tourists never see. It is a perfect antidote to the bustle of the city, and one of Mike’s personal favourite destinations.
