Every year, for a few fleeting weeks in August and September, the arid landscapes of Namaqualand undergo one of the most remarkable natural transformations on earth. Millions upon millions of wildflowers burst into bloom, turning the barren semi-desert into a dazzling carpet of colour that stretches from horizon to horizon. This multi-day tour takes you deep into the Northern Cape to witness this extraordinary phenomenon, one of the great natural spectacles of the southern hemisphere.
The journey north from Cape Town takes you through the Swartland wheat belt and into the Cederberg, a wilderness of dramatic sandstone formations sculpted by wind and time into fantastical shapes. The Cederberg is also home to some of the finest San rock art in southern Africa, as well as the rare and endemic Clanwilliam cedar trees that give the range its name. A stop in the town of Clanwilliam introduces you to rooibos tea, which grows only in this region, and you will have the opportunity to visit a tea estate and learn about the production of this uniquely South African beverage.
As you head further north, the landscape becomes increasingly stark and beautiful. The town of Nieuwoudtville, perched on the edge of the Bokkeveld Escarpment, is known as the bulb capital of the world, home to the highest concentration of bulb species of any area on earth. Nearby, the Nieuwoudtville Waterfall plunges into a gorge surrounded by fields of flowers, a sight that takes the breath away during peak season.
In the heart of Namaqualand, the flower displays are at their most intense. Entire valleys and hillsides glow with orange Namaqualand daisies, purple vygies, yellow gazanias, and countless other species. The flowers open their faces to follow the sun, and the best viewing is typically between 11am and 3pm on sunny days. Mike knows the best spots and the timing of the blooms, ensuring you see the most spectacular displays.
The return journey to Cape Town can include a stop at the charming mission village of Wupperthal, tucked into a remote Cederberg valley, or a detour through the Olifants River Valley, known for its citrus farms and stunning mountain scenery. This is a tour for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone who wants to witness one of the most awe-inspiring shows that the natural world has to offer.
