The Day a Swiss Guest Couldn't Stop Talking About Shark Spotters

Table Mountain Boulders Beach Cape Town Tours African Penguins travel tips

A guest from Switzerland was blown away by something most visitors barely notice: the shark spotters. Stationed in huts along the coast with binoculars, these watchers scan the ocean for sharks to keep beachgoers safe. The Swiss visitor found it unbelievable that people are employed to do this job. He couldn’t stop talking about it, took photographs of the shark spotter and his shirt, and planned to tell everyone back home about this surprising occupation.

It’s moments like these that make tours memorable, but the day itself is carefully designed to maximize the experience at two of Cape Town’s most iconic destinations.

Beating the Crowds at Table Mountain

The key to a great Table Mountain visit is timing. Leaving at 8:00 AM helps you reach the mountain before crowds arrive. Fast track tickets keep you from standing in line, though if weather doesn’t cooperate, you can visit the penguins first and return to the mountain later when fast track tickets generally aren’t needed.

Once at the top, the weather dictates what you’ll need. Bring a jacket in wintertime when it can be quite chilly, or sunblock in summer when temperatures soar. As you exit the cable car station, turn left to find a map on a rock showing three different walking routes. An hour at the top gives you enough time to take in the views and explore.

Meeting the Endangered Penguins

The penguin colony at Boulders Beach is about 30 minutes from town. After walking from the car park to the entrance, head left and follow the path all the way down to the beach for the best vantage point. The left side of the beach is where penguins gather in greater numbers. These charming birds are an endangered species, making each sighting special.

Before you leave, the souvenir shop at the exit and street vendors offer mementos of your visit. And here’s an insider tip: watch the movie ‘Penguin Town’ after your trip. It was filmed at this very colony in Simon’s Town.
