The Best Time to Visit Cape Town: A Month-by-Month Guide

One of the questions I get asked most often by visitors planning a trip to Cape Town is: “When is the best time to visit?” The honest answer is that Cape Town is a year-round destination, and every season brings something different and special. But understanding what to expect each month will help you plan the trip that is right for you.

Summer (December to February)

Cape Town’s summer months are warm, dry, and long on daylight. Average temperatures sit between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius, and the sun does not set until well after 8pm. This is peak tourist season, and for good reason: the beaches are glorious, Table Mountain is usually cloud-free, and the city buzzes with energy.

December and January are the warmest months and the most popular with international visitors. Hotel prices are at their highest, and popular attractions can be busy. If you are planning a summer visit, I recommend booking well in advance, especially over the Christmas and New Year period.

February is my personal favourite summer month. The crowds thin out slightly, the weather remains superb, and the famous Cape Doctor south-easterly wind begins to ease. It is an excellent time for wine tasting in the Winelands, as the harvest season is just beginning, and the vineyards are lush and green.

Autumn (March to May)

Autumn is arguably the best-kept secret in Cape Town travel. March and April bring warm, settled weather with average highs around 25 degrees, less wind than summer, and significantly fewer tourists. The light in autumn is extraordinary, casting a warm golden glow over the mountains and vineyards that photographers adore.

May marks the transition to winter, with the first rains arriving and temperatures dropping to around 18 degrees during the day. The landscape begins to turn green after the long dry summer, and the city takes on a cosier, more intimate atmosphere. Hotel rates drop considerably, making it an excellent time for budget-conscious travellers.

Winter (June to August)

Cape Town’s winter is mild by European and North American standards, with daytime temperatures around 15 to 18 degrees Celsius. It does rain, often in dramatic frontal systems that sweep in from the Atlantic, but the rain rarely lasts all day and is frequently punctuated by crisp, clear spells of brilliant sunshine.

Winter is whale season, and this alone makes it worth visiting. From June through November, Southern Right Whales migrate to the sheltered waters of Walker Bay near Hermanus to calve and nurse their young. Watching a 50-tonne whale breach just 30 metres from shore is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences you can have anywhere in the world.

The winter months also bring snow to the mountain peaks surrounding Cape Town, creating stunning contrasts between the white-capped mountains and the green valleys below. Hotel rates are at their lowest, restaurants are easier to book, and you will have many attractions largely to yourself.

Spring (September to November)

Spring is wildflower season, and it is magnificent. From mid-August, the West Coast and Northern Cape burst into bloom with millions of wildflowers, creating carpets of colour that stretch as far as the eye can see. The displays peak in September and are genuinely one of the great natural spectacles of the southern hemisphere.

October and November see Cape Town warming up again, with average highs around 22 degrees. The gardens are at their most beautiful, newborn animals appear in the game reserves, and the city begins to stir with the anticipation of summer. November is an excellent time to visit Table Mountain, as the weather is warm and the notorious tablecloth cloud is less frequent than in high summer.

What About the Wind?

Cape Town is known for its south-easterly wind, locally called the Cape Doctor because it blows away pollution and keeps the air fresh. The wind is strongest from November to March and can be bracing, particularly on exposed beaches and at the top of Table Mountain. If wind is a concern, plan outdoor activities for the morning, when conditions are usually calmer.

My Recommendation

If I had to pick the single best time to visit Cape Town, I would say mid-February to mid-April. The weather is warm and settled, the wind is lighter, the summer crowds have thinned, and the wine harvest is in full swing. But truly, there is no bad time. Each season reveals a different facet of this extraordinary city, and I have wonderful tours to offer no matter when you arrive.

The most important thing is simply to come. Cape Town has a way of exceeding every expectation, whenever you choose to visit.
